Michael's Favourite Therapy Quote:

“You can spend a lifetime being curious about the inner world of your partner, and being brave enough to share your own inner world, and never be done discovering all there is to know about each other. It’s exciting.” - John Gottman

Thank you for your interest in taking care of yourself and your relationship. I was a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years where I specialized in couples counseling. I’ve helped over 1000 couples with increasing their communication and connection. I am now re-establishing my private practice in Ottawa as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).

Practice Areas

Couples Counseling - I have extensive experience and can support you and your partner to increase communication, increase trust, and increase connection. I see 3 types of couples in general: People setting a healthy foundation before they become distant. People struggling with long term disconnect, ready to reboot their relationship. People in an emergency who are at risk of losing their relationship. Anger Management - I can support you to understand and overcome your anger through emotional awareness, healthy boundaries, and replacement behaviors. Anxiety - I can support you to understand the function of your anxiety and learn new tools to maximize self-care and feel empowered with triggers and stress. Autism Spectrum/Neurodivergence - I can support parents of children on the spectrum and youth and adults who identify as Neurodivergent.

Education & Experience

I have an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from National University in San Diego, California. I have been a psychotherapist since 2004. I became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California in 2011 and then opened a private practice specializing in Couples Counseling.

Therapeutic Approach

I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as the foundation of my work because it is well supported by research and is immediately accessible. Beyond CBT, I integrate the teachings of my two favourite authors on relationships: John Gottman and Sue Johnson. My style resonates well with the books by these authors. My support offers empathy tools and emotional intelligence that is not taught well enough by our society.

About Eugene Michael

I tell people that I keep it simple and only wear 3 hats: Counselor, Hiker, and Dad. With my time away from counseling, I try to get to the outdoors on foot to scale the hills of Ontario and Quebec by completing lists of hikes from local books. I have 2 daughters approaching adulthood and my partner and I are trying to experience every moment of connection possible before they leave us waiting for grandchildren.
